Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie Freels, 77, were held at 3 p.m. Monday at Waters Funeral Home. The Rev. Ralph Adamson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiated and interment was in Vandalia Cemetery.
Music for the rites was provided by Mrs. Rennie Davis, organist.
Grandsons serving as pallbearers were Eugene Freels, Auxvasse; Lynn Freels, Bobby Freels, Martinsburg; Mervyn Dean Freels, O'Fallon; Robert Woodrow, Perry, and Claude Kemp, Mokane.
Mrs. Freels died at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at Audrain Medical Center following a lengthy illness. She had been hospitalized since Sept. 5.
One of 16 children of Everett and Myrtle Hendrix Brown, she was born April 5, 1901 in Pike County. She was educated in rural schools and for a time was employed by Ely-Walker Garment Factory. She was a lifelong community resident and was a member of the Antioch Church near Bowling Green.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. William (Algen) Beedle, Vandalia; one son, Malcolm Freels, Martinsburg; nine grandchildren ;14 great grandchildren; five sisters, Miss Belva Brown, Miss Maude Brown, Miss Lucille Brown, Mrs. James Kirk, all of Mexico and Mrs. Dick Hahnfeld, Independence; seven brothers, W.R. Brown, Vandalia; L.N. Brown and H.D. Brown, Mexico; Lawrence Brown, Laddonia; Marion Brown, Florissant; Marvin Brown, Columbia; Edgar Brown, Leland, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, George Freels, Jr. and Billy Wayne Freels; one grandson, Jimmy Lee, and one great grandson, Robert Eugene Turner; one sister and two brothers.
