REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF WILHELM CARL SCHMIDT

Wilhelm (Bill) Carl Schmidt of Lexington, Nebraska, died Monday, January 2, 2006, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. He was 94 years young.

Bill was born on October 1, 1911, at Buffalo, Nebraska, to John Adolph and Louise (Lange) Schmidt, baptized on December 5, 1911, and confirmed May 23, 1926, at the First Lutheran Church, Buffalo, Nebraska. He attended school at District 44, Buffalo, and First Lutheran Parochial School.

Bill stayed on the family farm helping his father through the depression and drought years of the 1930's, working part-time at the Buffalo Store. He spent a short time in California in 1940 and 1941, where he was employed by a building contractor and later by Ralph's Grocery Stores.

He returned to Lexington to help his father on the farm when his brother, Louie, entered the Armed Forces. After the end of the war and the death of their father, Bill and his brother bought the family farm and with the help of the Great Plains Conservation Program, developed the level land for irrigation. In 1965, their farm was chosen for the Dawson County Conservation farm of the year award.

On June 1, 1952 Wilhelm Carl Schmidt and long time friend Hilda Ellen Gluenkin were married at the Buffalo Grove Presbyterian Church in Cozad. To this union were born two girls, Lianne Sue and Lisa Francine Schmidt. They joined the Buffalo Grove Presbyterian Church where Bill served many years as Trustee and usher.

Bill retired from active farming in 1976 but continued working part time on the farm during the summer. He and Hilda moved to Lexington in 1981.

Bill always enjoyed sports-especially baseball and football. He also bowled for several years after he came to town and always enjoyed playing pool at the Generation Center.

Bill's immediate family was:

Parents - Johan Adolph and Louise (Lange) Schmidt

Wife - Hilda Ellen (Gluenkin) Schmidt

Two Daughters - Lianne Sue Schmidt, Lincoln and Lisa Francine (Bruce) Wolfe, Lincoln

Two Grand-Daughters - Angel Marie Schmidt and Danielle Louise Schmidt
