Herman Henry Lohman was the son of German immigrants Herman Henry Lohmann and Wilhelmine Sieks and the husband of Minnie Thiede. He was raised in a primarily German speaking home. But as a member of the second generation he was bilingual English-German. He attended first St. Stephen's (Lutheran) school and then Forest Hill Avenue School. When he finished school he first became a carpenter. Then in 1895 along with his brother Henry he started a livery service, 'Lohman Brothers,' for the rental of horses and carriages, often for funeral processions. .
Herman and his son Archie both became funeral directors and in 1917 they converted the livery service into 'Lohman and Son Funeral Service,' renamed 'Lohman Funeral Service' after Herman's death. On a passport application he listed his height as 5 feet 7 and 1/2 inches tall.
Milwaukee English newspaper obituary:
"LOHMAN-Sunday, May 18. Herman H. Lohman, beloved husband of Mrs. Minnie Lohman and father of Archie, Mrs. Etta Carroll and Esther Lohman, at age of 62 years 5 months 16 days. Funeral Wednesday, May 21, at 2 p. m. from residence, 326 11th av. to St. Stephan's church, corner Grove and Scott. Interment Pilgrims Rest."
