Herman emigrated with his family from Prussia to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the U. S. in 1852. Upon arrival in Milwaukee he joined St. Stephen Lutheran Church. When the new St. Martini Lutheran Church was started in 1884 he and his family joined that church. The Kirschenbuch of both churches provide a record of major events in the life of the Lohmann family in Milwaukee.
Herman was a farmer in Germany. In the 1860 census in Lake twp, Milwaukee County, WI, he was listed as a farmer. In 1870 he was listed as a laborer and in 1880 as a carpenter.
In the 1860 census Herman was listed as having a personal estate valued at $300. In 1870 he owned $1000 in real estate and a personal estate valued at $100.
In 1909 Lohman Funeral Service had not yet started so undertaker Charles H. Frantz of Milwaukee handled the burial arrangements for Herman, Sr. and his wife Mina.
