Spelling variations are common among early Anglo-Saxon names. Furthermore, as the English language itself evolved, even the spelling of literate people's names evolved as well, which would explain variations that include Fadeley, Fadely, and Fadley. They are all the same name.

Moreover, even within the same family, there are often variations, which is why you will read that Allen Fadeley was a son of William Nelson Fadley. It's not a mistake.

Allen is a son of William Nelson Fadley and Betty Alice Walker Fadley. Alice gave birth to Allen on June 23, 1908.

Allen's was a childhood of poverty, as his father Nelson was a laborer in the apple orchards of the Shenandoah Valley, and in 1914 Allen was only six years old when his mother died.

The motherless 11-year-old Allen contracted pneumonia on about December 18, 1919, suffered through Christmas, and died the day after Christmas. Only the family could know the depth of their grief when they had to lay 11-year-old Allen in an unmarked grave in Old Pine Church Cemetery, a site that, at the time of this publication, is no more than a vacant field along South Middle Road in Mount Jackson, Virginia.

More information about Allan's family is available in a book titled "The Root Cellar" by Gary Fadley, available at Amazon.com or by requesting a free PDF version from the author. Additionally, at the time of this publication, more information about the Fadeleys is in a book titled "From Valley to Valley" by Gary Fadley, available also on Amazon or by contacting the author, and the paperback is available at the time of this publication, at Shenandoah County Library.
