Mary E. Ivey was born the daughter of John Franklin Ivey and Malinda Caroline Ivey. She was one of ten children in this family.

The 1880 census finds her in the home of her parents of two years of age however, she is never noted on another census.

John Franklin Ivey died in 1916 and the obituary lists "Mary" though no last name. It is unknown if she married or when she died.

Mary Ivey was the daughter of John Franklin Ivey. Her mother was Malindia (Malinda Caroline) Ivey. She is listed in one census as part of that family of seven children, though the census indicates ten births. Mary Ivey married(James)Patrick (Pat) Smith, known as Pat Smith when they were both 16 years old. They had six children, one died as an infant. Andrew, Carl, Rosa, Thelma,Claude (died as on infant)and Art. They were separated shortly after the death of their mother Mary (Ivey) Smith. Arthur was raised by a friend of Pat Smith, Mae Jones, and went by the name of Arthur Jones for the rest of his life. Art eventually moved to Michigan and reconnected with his two sisters, Rose (Rosalee Smith (Shepherd) (Ley) and Thelma Smith (Faulkner) who both lived in Grand Rapids Michigan until they died.
