Hit By Auto While Leading Horse, Man Fatally Injured

Harry Mummert, Brodbeck RD 1, Expires In Hanover Hospital; Driver Held, Wife Seriously Injured

Hanover, October 15 – Struck by an automobile while leading a horse on the Baltimore Pike, two miles south of Hanover, this evening at 7 o’clock, Harry Mummert, aged 60 years, Brodbeck RD 1, near Lineboro, Md., was fatally injured. He died in the Hanover General Hospital at 10:40 o’clock.
Death resulted from a fractured skull, multiple fractures of the left leg, fracture of the right leg, and body lacerations and contusions. Coroner L. U. Zech conducted an investigation and decided to hold an inquest, the date to be set later.
The man was struck by an automobile driven by Maurice W. Wentz, aged 17 years. Wentz’ car was occupied by his wife. The Wentz family is also from Brodbeck RD 1. Mrs. Wentz is a patient in the hospital with a fractured skull, cuts of the scalp and forehead. Mr. Wentz was treated for severely lacerated hands. Her condition is serious.
Wentz has been arrested on a technical charge of assault and battery by automobile. The information was laid before Justice of the Peace L. D. Sell by Paul Mummert, a son of the victim. He is held under $1,000 bond for his later appearance.
Mr. Mummert had purchased the horse in Hanover today and was leading it home at the time of the accident. He was walking south on the Baltimore Pike in the vicinity of Nace’s Store. The Wentz-driven car approached from the opposite direction. Wentz told the investigating officer that he did not see the horse and man until he was within 20 feet of them. The vehicle struck the horse when the driver swerved to the left to avoid a collision. Wentz stated that Mummert was in the middle of the highway at the time and that he carried no light.
Mr. Mummert was taken to the Hanover Hospital in the Hanover ambulance. Passersby took Mr. and Mrs. Wentz to the office of Dr. John Zeigler, Baltimore Street, from which place they were removed to the Hanover Hospital in the ambulance.
The horse was severely injured and on orders from police was shot by Constable Claude Leppo, West Manheim Township. The accident was investigated by Patrolman J. G. Warren of the Gettysburg sub-station of the highway patrol.
