FIFTY-FOURTH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Courtad, of This City, Celebrate Event With
Children Saturday Evening


With pleasing simplicity Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Courtad, of North Fifth street, were delightfully suprised Saturday evening at their home when they were given a party by members of the immediate family and friends in commencration of their respective birthdays and their fifty-fourth wedding anniversary which were observed during the past week.

Music and cards were enjoyed during the evening and at a late hour the table was temptingly prepared in keeping with the observance. The following children, relatives and friends were present: Mrs. M. A. Keller, Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Courtad, and daughter, Patricia Ann, of Toledo; Mr. and Mrs. Joel Smalley, son, Frederic, and daughter, Evelyn; Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Courtad, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Castanien, sons Donald and Thomas, and daugher, Anna Louise; Mr. and Mrs. August Courtad, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Courtad, and John Courtad and Mrs. Effie Payne, all of this city and vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Courtad were the recipients of many beautiful gifts and well wishes for happy returns of the day.

The immediate circle fo the Mr. and Mrs. Courtad family has remained unbroken and besides therir nine children, they have thirty-four grandchildren, and thrity-three great-grandchildren, including in all seventy-six descendants in the four generations. Coincidentally Mr. Courtad's birthday falls on March 14, Mrs. Courtad's on March 17 and their wedding anniversary being observed in the same week this year. Mr. and Mrs. Curtad are aged seventy-five and seventy-three years respectively. They were united in marriage when Mr. Courtad was th=wenty-one years of age and his wife nineteen in the year of 1878 by Rev. Father Braschler, of this city.

Nine children were born to this union. There ar Bertha, wife of M. A. Keller, of Toledo; Emma, wife of Jerome Pahl, of Akron; Maude, wiefe of Joel Smalley, of southeast of this city; Margaret, wife of H. H. Thornbert, of Peru, Ind.,; Peral L., wife of Albert Courtad, of northeast of this city; L. J. Courtad, of northeast of this city; Myrtle E., wife of Albert Lang, of South Haven, Mich.; Frieda, wife of R. W. Gear, of Toledo; and Harold B. Courtad, of Toledo. Because of the distance some of the children live from here or because of illness in the family, a number of teh children of the venerable couple were unable to be present for the anniversary.

Mrs. Courtad was born March 17, 1859, in this city. Her maiden nmae was Catural, she being the adopted daughter of James and Elisa Crawford, who then resided north east of this city. Mr Crawford was a cousin of the Colonel William Crawford, Rev. War hero, who was burned at the stake in this section of the state by the Indians. One sister, Mrs. Mary Weaver Stecher, passed away eight years ago. Mrs. Courtad has no other living relaties in this country, her mother having died when she was born, and her father a short time later.

Mr. Courtad was born in Seneca County one and a half miles north of Adrian. He was the son of Peter and Clementine Courtad, long since deceased. When he was but six years of age, his parents moved with him to a farm five miles northeast of this city where Mr. Courtad grew to manhood, spending his entire life on the farm. Following his marriage, Mr. Courtad farmed for his father for two years, then moving to the Hohwald place, east of this city, where two years later, following a sale the family moved to Van Wert County. Nine years later, Mr. and Mrs. Courtad again returned to this county, moving on the Crawford homestead, where they resided twenty-three years, when they moved to their present residence in this city. Mr. Courtad worked at the carpenter and tin trade here until he retired from active life twelve years ago.

Two half-brothers, Peter and Lawrence Courtad, and a half-sister, Mrs. Margaret Fetzer, are deceased. A half-sister, Mrs. Mary Lauby, resides at Findlay. Mr. Courtad also has three living brothers and two sisters; John Courtad, of this city; August Courtad and Martin J. Courtad, of near this city; Mrs. Elizabeth Greth, of Kirby; and Lena, wife of John Pahl, of Carey.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Courtad are enjoying good health and were able to greatly enjoy the pleasant surprise rendered them Saturday evening by their children and friends.

The Daily Chief joing their many friends and acquaintances in extending congratulations and wishing them many more happy birthdays. Incidentally, Mr. and Mrs. Courtad have been readers of the Daily Chief for fifty-four years.

Former Resident of Upper Sandusky Dies at Home of Son

Joseph A. Courtad, 85, former resident of Upper Sandusky for many years, died at the home of his son, Harold Courtad, in Toledo, Sunday afternoon at 2:05 o'clock. Death was attributed to complications.

Joseph A. Courtad was the son of the late Peter and Clementine Courtad. He was born near Adrian, Ohio, March 14, 1857, being aged 85 years, 10 months and 17 days at the time of his death. Mr. Courtad followed the occupation of farming until 1909, when he moved to Upper Sandusky. He resided with his son in Toledo during the past six years.

Mr. Courtad was united in marriage March 19, 1878 with Cathurah Esther Eisenman, who preceded him in death in May 1933. Nine children were born to this union. They are Bertha, wife of M. A. Keller, of Toledo, Emma, wife of Jerome Pahl, of Akron; Maude E., wife of Joel Smalley, of near this city; Margaret C., wife of H. B. Thornberg, of Toledo; Lizzy P., wife of Albert Courtad, of northeast of this city; Lorin J. Couratd, of near this city; Myrtle E., wife of Harry Barbarett of Ypsilanti, Mich., Frieda E., wife of R. W. Gear, of Toledo, and Harold E. Courtad, of Toledo.

Also surviving are a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Greth, of Kirby, and Mrs. John Pahl, of Carey, and two brothers, August and M. J. Courtad of this city.

Mr. and Mrs. Couratad observed their 54 wedding ann. on Mar. 19, 1932. He leaves a large circle of friends and acquaintances in this vicinity.

The body will be brought to the Bringman and Co., funeral home in this city, where funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. H. C. Kellermeyers, pastor of Trinity Evangelical and Reformed church, officiating. Interment will be made in Old Mission Cemetery.
