Born Aug. 31, 1927, in Garrett County, MD, he was the son of the late Norman C. and Rhoda (Robinson) Garlitz.
William was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys E. Garlitz, on May 30, 2013.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. He retired in 1976 from Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown after 21 years of service. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of Funkstown American Legion Post 211, AMVETS Post 10, National AARP and the Maryland Classified Employee Association.
He is survived by one daughter, Violia Marie DeHaven; three sons, Stephen Charles Garlitz, Robert Michael Garlitz and companion, Julie Spence, of Stephenson, VA, and David William Garlitz; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, William was preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Winebrenner, Mildred Baker and Pansy Wilson; and seven brothers, Clarence, Esco, Arvil, Raymond, Gilbert, Vernard and Elmer Garlitz.
Services will be held at Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown; burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, with military honors provided by the Joint Veterans Council and Marine Corps League of Hagerstown.
