Joseph (Dinning) Denning was the son of John and Jane (Robson) Denning. The Dinning last name was changed from Dinning to Denning in 1852 during naturalization. Joseph was one of the four original family members who helped make the pioneering family happen.

Joseph was the uncle of one of America's Greatest Baseball players that ever lived "Joseph Jerome McGinnity." Joseph's sister Hannah Denning-McGinnity named her third son Joseph after her brother Joseph Denning. Joseph had a long life in which most of it was spent in the coalmines from Illinois to Missouri.

He was married twice. He married Margaret S. Collins in Lafayette County, Missouri and had one daughter, Hester Ann Denning, born in 1872. He divorced Margaret in 1881. On September 26, 1885, he married Sarah Jane Waggoner-Morgan in Marion Township, Jasper County, Missouri. She already had six children of her own. Sarah Jane and Joseph Denning had one daughter Mary Rosetta Denning. Joseph lived over 31 years in the Joplin and Waco area of Jasper County, Missouri. Although Sarah Jane does not have a grave marker she is buried right next to Joseph along with her daughter, Rachael Elizabeth Morgan-Hendry and her husband, Charles Hendry, is next to her. There is no grave marker for them.
