Charles George Chiki, 88, of Berwick, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, April 22, 2016. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Berwick, on Feb. 9, 1928, Charlie was the son of the late Charles and Mary (Kovacs) Chiki, immigrants from Hungary. Following his graduation from Berwick High School, Charlie entered the U.S. Army and served his country in Germany until 1948.

After returning to Berwick in 1948, Charlie began his career as a welder at the ACF, American Car & Foundry Company. In 1949, he attended bricklaying school, under the instruction of Fred Davis, through a military work program. Charlie joined the Bricklaying Union in 1956, and in 1957 he accepted a job with a local contractor, Harold Hough, “Builder of Fine Homes”. As a result of this opportunity, he had a significant role in bricking several hundred homes and businesses in the Berwick and Mountain Top areas.

Charlie was an extremely kind and giving man which was exemplified in his countless acts of generosity. The most significant act was saving a little boy from the second story of a burning home. He was honored publicly by his community for this selfless act of heroism.

He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and he wholeheartedly adored his five great-grandchildren. Charlie was an avid golfer and loved gardening. He had a propensity for fixing things, as well as always lending a helping hand to anyone in need.

Throughout Charlie’s life, he was a devoted member and usher of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Berwick. He was a lifetime member of the Ranger Hose, a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, Catholic War Veterans Post 1419, and the International Union of Bricklayers Local 5-PA.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his sisters: Theresa Chamberlain, Agnes Federici, Mary Kline; brother, Rudolph Chiki; and his son-in-law, Don Ruggerio.

He is survived by his loving, caring and devoted wife of 63 years, Louise S. (Durso) Chiki; his daughter, Sherry M. Ruggerio; grandson, Christopher and Janet Ruggerio of South Burlington, Vt.; granddaughter, Teresa and Gabriel Peters of Berwick; and five great-grandchildren: Enza and Donato Ruggerio; Angeni, Alex, and Ava Peters; and two sisters: Louise Kovach of Kenneth City, Fla.; and Rose Chiki of Berwick.

The family would like to thank Cathy, Charlie’s nurse, from Commonwealth Home Health and Hospice of Berwick. Her dedication and compassionate care will be forever appreciated.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, April 27, 2016, from 9-11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1730 Fowler Ave., Berwick, where the Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Francis J. Tamburro, his pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Berwick.
