Louise (Chiki) Kovach, 101, and 10 days short of her 102nd birthday, formerly of Berwick passed away peacefully with family by her side, at her residence in Kenneth City, Florida, on Friday, May 17, 2019. She was born May 27, 1917, in Berwick, a daughter to the late Charles and Mary (Kovacs) Chiki.

In her younger years, Louise attended Berwick schools and helped raise her younger brothers and sisters. Later, she worked as a seamstress at various Berwick area textile mills. She also worked at the Berwick Ribbon factory and the H.L. Hunt canning factory. During World War II, she helped keep the home fires burning while her husband served in the Army fighting in the European Theater.

Louise was a world traveler, visiting all seven continents. While in Africa, she enjoyed riding on camels and developed a real love for elephants.

Hating the cold and shoveling snow, she moved to Florida in 1979, following her husband’s death. For many years, she would return to Pennsylvania in July to attend the Chiki family reunion. She loved attending local carnivals, where she enjoyed playing various carnival games, including ring toss, and eating homemade vanilla ice cream, especially at the Orangeville Carnival. She also loved going to yard sales and shopping at the Berwick Senior Citizen Center. Her annual stay in Pennsylvania always ended after attending the Bloomsburg Fair.

In 2004, Louise’s daughter, Mary Ann, moved to Florida to live with her mother, and they enjoyed the warmer weather and their time together. Years later, Mary Ann became her caretaker and guardian angel.

Surviving Louise are four sons: Donald and wife Dolores of Nescopeck, Dennis and his companion, David Logan, of Florida, David and wife Janet of Berwick, and Michael of Philadelphia; two daughters: Arlene Hanson and husband Raymond of Florida, and Mary Ann Kishbaugh of Florida; sister, Rose Chiki of Berwick; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

As well as her parents, Louise was preceded in death in 1978 by her loving husband, Mike. Also preceding her in death were sisters: Theresa Chamberlain, Agnes Federici and Mary Kline, and brothers: Rudolph and Charles Chiki.

Louise was a longtime member of the First Reformed United Church of Christ of Berwick.
A kind and loving wife, mother, and friend, she will be sorely missed by everyone who
had the good fortune to have known her.

It was Louise’s wish that her body be donated to science.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Suncoast Hospice, 3050 1st Ave. South, St. Petersburg, FL 33712.
