Gertrude (Bixler-Green) Nugen Stapp

Gertrude Stapp was born on September 24, 1889, in Kingman, Kansas, a daughter of Albert Bixler and Elizabeth Gibson. Gertrude's mother Elizabeth died in 1890, not long after giving birth to Gertrude in 1889.

According to the 1900 US census, Gertrude, age 10, was living in Harper, Kansas, in the household of Thomas and Margaret Green. Gertrude was listed as their adopted daughter. Thomas and Margaret Green had been married for six years and had no children of their own.

On September 24, 1908, a "Surprise Party" was given for Gertrude Green on her 19th birthday. Many of her friends, especially some of the Nugen family, were in attendance as their friend Gertie was truly surprised.

Then, on June 16, 1909, a marriage license was issued; Gertrude Green and Albert Nugen were married in Anthony, Kansas. Gertrude and Lewis Albert Nugen raised their family of five children in Kansas and California until Albert's death in 1939. In 1954 Gertrude married Ernest Herman Stapp, whose wife Mary had died in 1950. Ernest H. Stapp died in 1961.

In deference to both her birth parents and her adoptive parents -- and to clear up confusion regarding Gertrude's maiden name -- 'Bixler-Green' may be the more appropriate maiden name for Gertrude Nugen Stapp.

NOTE: The family names Nugen & Nugent appear to be interchangeable!
