He was the son of Lewis and Gertrude Nugent, born on Oct. 24, 1911. He was raised on a farm in Attica, Kan., with his sister, Opal, and brothers, Edward, Albert and Bob.

A natural born storyteller, Carl used to tell about hiding corn from the Indians as they crossed the plains in a covered wagon. Even after Carl got far, far away from the cornfields of Kansas, however, he returned in a tornado of dreams when he landed his first Hollywood job working on "The Wizard Of Oz." Young Carl's job was to hold up the Cowardly Lion's tail from the soundstage rafters with a fishing pole as Dorothy and her trio skipped and sang down the Yellow Brick Road.

That was the beginning of a long and colorful career in motion pictures and television as a property master and Starkeeper. Carl came from the early days of Hollywood where he worked with such stars as Greer Garson, Greta Garbo, Lana Turner, Clark Gable, Judy Garland and Fred MacMurray. He kept his family entertained for years with his favorite stories of the 'ole showbiz days.

Nevertheless, Carl's true love was his family. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Lucille Jane Redd; and his two beloved daughters, Carol Adams and Judy Taylor, were the apples of his eye. He was blessed with six grandchildren: Allyson Adams, Jeb Adams, Tiffany Taylor, Adam Taylor, Matt Taylor and Cooper Taylor. Carl was nicknamed "Tex" by his grandson, Jeb, and for the next generation the name stuck. Tex's great-grandchildren are Carly Taylor, Shaylee Mason, Brock Mason, Zane Taylor, Madison Adams and Elijah Adams. Wife of Jeb Adams, Pam, and widow of Adam Taylor, Annie, were also very dear to Carl.

In 1948 he became a member of the Culver City Forshay Masonic Lodge in California. Later he joined the Shriners of Malaikah Temple of Los Angeles through the York Rite. Carl was very proud of these accomplishments.

Carl's family sincerely thanks the doctors and staff of the Madison Valley Manor and the hospital for their excellent and compassionate care. Carl will be remembered by his family and friends at a graveside funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at Madison Valley Cemetery in Ennis.
