Robert J "Joe" Burns, 72, of Cherokee died Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Via Christi. He was born August 8, 1942, to John and Myrtle Burris Burns. He grew up in Beulah, attending elementary school there. His high school years were spent in Cherokee at Good Ol' Crawford High.
He married Carolyn Sue Presley on June 3, 1972. She preceded him in death in 2012.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Stacy Burns and Michael Harris of Cherokee, son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Heather Burns, of Pittsburg, grandchildren; Alicyn Burns, Sarah Kumar, Victoria Kumar and Reuben Kumar, all of Pittsburg. Sisters Norma Washington, of Beulah and Alice Cherry of Olathe and brother, Willard Burns of Mindenmines. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers George, Melvin, Millard, John, Roy and Harold; sisters Anna Sterling and June Jones.
Joe was chief of police in Cherokee for many years and also owned and operated the Home Cafe in Beautiful Downtown Cherokee. Before that he worked for Hull and Dillon's Packing Plant and Beitzinger's Hardware.
He was active in the Cherokee United Methodist Church, Senior Citizens, and Ruritan. He was treasurer for the Sheridan Township, and Beulah and Baker Cemeteries.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, February 21 at 2 pm at the Cherokee United Methodist Church with Pastors Shin Hyo Lee and Jamie Tickel officiating. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com. Cremation by Bath-Naylor Funeral Home Weir, KS.
