Hans Christoph, who went by "Christ" was born at #30 Horsten, in the Schaumburg district of Lower Saxony, Germany. He was baptized September 13, 1846 in Bad Nenndorf, a village 1.1 km. to the east. Christ was the second child born to Hans Heinrich Christoph ("Henry") Bartels and his wife Engel Maria Dorothea ("Mary"), nee Hahn. He had an older sister, Catharina, who was born 10 May 1844; his younger brothers were Hans Heinrich ("Hans"), Heinrich Christoph ("Henry"), Heinrich Conrad ("Conrad"), Christoph August Conrad Gottlieb ("August") and Conrad Wilhelm. The youngest brother died in Germany before his second birthday.

Christ was the first of his family to come to America, arriving on August 29, 1865. He helped his sister to come, who arrived on August 22, 1867. His next two brothers, Henry and Conrad, managed the trip to America, arriving October 6, 1868. Finally, with a pooling of resources, the ones in America managed to secure the funds for the rest of the family (their parents and brothers Hans and August) to immigrate, and they arrived on January 17, 1871.

Christ settled initially in Illinois and married Catherine Lages around 1869. They had seven children, all daughters; all but two died within an 8-year timespan of 1878 to 1886. Anna Charlotta did live to adulthood, married Carl Tiemann, and died after giving birth to her fourth child in 1901 at the age of 24. The remaining daughter, Anna Elizabeth, then married Carl Tiemann.

Christ's wife Catherine died in the same time frame as his five daughters, in 1886. Christ married Louise Tiemann on September 1, 1887 at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Gage County, Nebraska.

After his daughter Charlotta died, the decision was made by Christ & Louise, and by Carl and his family, to make a fresh start, and they emigrated to Kay County, Oklahoma, in the Weston precinct. This was their final earthly move, Christ dying about 10 years later.
