Oakland, Garrett County, Maryland
August 6, 1903
Benjamin Waltz, a former resident and native of this county, committed suicide at his home near Dayton, Ohio, one day last week by hanging. He was a brother to Mrs. John W. Arnold of Oakland and of W. Y. Waltz of Austen, W. Va., and a son of the late Wm Waltz, one of the pioneer settlers in this section.
Many years ago he resided near Kingwood, W. Va., where he lost his wife and two children almost at the same time. This lost seriously affected his mind which for months would be rational and then he would again become unbalanced. A year or so since he visited relatives here he seemed in good health and spirits and his mind seemed perfectly balanced, but it is supposed that in a fit of insanity he ended his earthly existence.
No particulars other than those above stated could be obtained at this time. (From the family albums and papers of Susan Edna (Whorton) Friend, 2nd. great niece of Benjamin Waltz.
The article was among the papers and albums on the Waltz, Hauser, Arnold, and Whorton families that Susan received from her paternal aunt, Winona Whorton Loraw in the 1979's and 1980's. Transcribed by Ronn E. Friend, 3X great nephew)
