BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF MINNIE CATHERINE WALTZ - Based on oral history and family albums passed through Eva Marion (Waltz) Arnold to her great-granddaughter Susan Edna (Whorton) Friend

By Ronn E. Friend, Waltz Descendant - June 2019

Born on October 18, 1868 in Kingwood, West Virginia, Minnie was the second of four children of Benjamin Henry Waltz (1841-1903) and Lidia Catherine White (1843-1975). She was seven years old when her mother died in 1875. According to family lore, because her father was unable to care for a household of children, she and her two sisters were taken in by family members and neighbors. A family story is that Minnie was to have been adopted by the Honorable William G. Brown and his wife Margaret of Kingwood, but she cried so much because she wanted to return home that they traded her for her sister Mary, whose nickname was “Mame”. Her youngest sister “Titia” who was around two years old when their mother died, was later sent to live with Waltz relatives in Chatham, Ohio. Her brother David remained with their father Benjamin and moved with him to Medina, Ohio around 1878, and in his late teens moved to Michigan where he married and raised a family.

Benjamin was grief stricken at the loss of his wife Lidia and having his daughters being placed in other homes. According to family members, this loss affected his health and mind, resulting in ongoing bouts of depression. Around 1878 he relocated to Medina, Ohio where several of his siblings and other family members had previously settled. A few years after relocating to Medina, Benjamin married Amantha Miller, his first cousin once removed. Amantha’s grandmother Sarah Waltz Miller and Benjamin's father William Waltz were siblings. Benjamin and Amantha had one son, Roscoe. In 1903, in one of his depressed moods Benjamin committed suicide by hanging.

From 1876 to around 1892, Minnie lived with her maternal grandfather David O. White and his second wife Ivy Listen White in Herring, West Virginia, about five miles from Kingwood. Her sister Mame married Alden Eaton in December 1889 in a large lavish wedding at the Brown home and about 18 months later in 1891 they and their young son set out for North Dakota to join Alden’s brothers in the horse and cattle business. Minnie soon followed for a visit and stayed on in North Dakota where she met William James Reid. They married in Medora, North Dakota on January 2, 1895. Unfortunately, he died on February 11, 1898 in Dickinson, North Dakota following an operation for acute appendicitis. They had no children. She never remarried after his death.

After her husband's death, she moved from Medora to Dickenson and remained in her house there for a short while taking in boarders, but had a hard time making ends meet. In 1900 she enjoyed an extended visit with her father and stepmother Amantha Miller Waltz in Chatham, Ohio, and while there also spent time with her sister Tisha, who had married Earnest E. Wallace. She returned to her home in Dickenson and remained there until 1905. Shortly after her sister Mame and the Eatons moved their horse and cattle operations from North Dakota to Wolf, Wyoming in 1904 to what would become the Eaton Ranch, Minnie went for a visit and never left. She worked at the ranch as a housekeeper for years.

Minnie died at the age of 92 at her home on the Eaton Ranch. She is buried next to her husband William James Reid in the Dickenson Cemetery, Dickenson, North Dakota.
