G. Book Roth, 85, a retired Carlisle funeral director and church leader, died Monday, July 28, 2008, at the Church of God Home in Carlisle.

Born Oct. 8, 1922, in North Middleton Township, he was a son of the late Edward W. and S. Minerva Book Roth.

Roth, a long-time funeral director in Carlisle, started as a partner in the Shulenberger and Roth Funeral Home.
He was the builder and owner/director of the G. Book Roth Funeral Home on Walnut Bottom Road in Carlisle. He then merged his business with the Hoffman Funeral Home.

A 1940 graduate of Carlisle High School, Roth attended Dickinson College and Elizabethtown College, and was a graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 6th Convalescent Hospital following Gen. George S. Patton's 3rd Army through Europe.

Roth was a deacon at Carlisle Church of the Brethren, where he was a member of the choir and a former moderator of the church. He was a member and past president of the Carlisle Kiwanis Club, a past master and trustee of Cumberland Star Lodge 197 F&AM, a member of St. John's Royal Arch Chapter 171, the Harrisburg Consistory and the Zembo Temple of Harrisburg.

Roth was a member of the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association, the National Funeral Directors Association and was past president and former secretary-treasurer of the Capital City Funeral Directors Association. He was a member of the Brethren Home Community Foundation Board, New Oxford; a former Trustee of Elizabethtown College; a former member and past-president of the Todd Home Board, Carlisle; a member of American Legion Post 101 and VFW Post 477, both of Carlisle; a member of the Cumberland County Historical Society; and past president of the Carlisle Family YMCA.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Arlene Ziegler Roth; four children, Bill B. (and his wife, Debbie) Roth of Mobile, Ala., Allen Z. (and his wife, Cindy) Roth of Boiling Springs, Connie H. (and her husband, Kurt) Henry of Mechanicsburg and Dean G. (and his wife, Cindy) Roth, St. Marys. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Ryan B. Roth, Kyle L. Henry, Galen T. Roth, Abbi D. Roth, Autumn A. Roth, Cassie E. Roth and Harley D Roth.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, David, Mark and Roy, and three sisters, Elizabeth, Helen and Zella.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Church of the Brethren, 1340 Forge Road, Carlisle, preceded by visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home, 219 N. Hanover St., Carlisle. A public Masonic memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home immediately thereafter. Private burial will be in Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle.
