Edward William Roth, 69, of Carlisle R. D. 3, in North Middleton Township, a retired farmer and prominent churchman, died January 28, at the Carlisle Hospital following a stroke suffered Friday at his home.
Born in Blain, Perry County, he was the son of the late Rev. David and Matilda Moose Roth. He was a charter member of the First Church of the Brethren Carlisle, serving as deacon and trustee and treasurer of the church for many years. He also held the office of Sunday School superintendent for a long period. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class of the Sunday School.
He served two terms as tax collector of North Middletown Township and was also a member of the district school board before his resignation four years ago because of ill health.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. S. Minerva Book Roth; three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth R. Adams, Carlisle; Mrs. Helen R. Martin, Hagerstown; and Mrs. Zella K. Bowers, Carlisle R. D. 3; four sons, David E., Loysville R.D.; W. Mark, Carlisle R.D. 6; Roy H., Carlisle R. D. 3; and G. Book Roth, Carlisle; and 17 grandchildren.
Funeral services were in the First Church of the Brethren. Officiating was the Rev. David J. Markey, pastor, and the Rev. Glenn Gingrich, of Blain. Burial was in Westminster Cemetery.
