She moved to San Antonio after graduation and began working for the The San Antonio Light newspaper. After the family moved from San Antonio, she taught school in Jourdanton, Texas where she met and married Frank Bender in September of 1934.
She and Frank were the parents of five children. Thelma Bender died of a heart attack and is buried next to Frank and near to her parents, James Emory and Ella Addison Walton.
