Great Uncle Arleigh, was a retired U.S. Army Major, with 30 years service, who enlisted in about 1930 and served in World War II & in the Korean War retiring in 1956, then becoming a rancher. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor for his service.

Buzz was born in Arden, TX, being the youngest son of W. Robert & Lizzie Bush Underwood. He had three surviving sons, son Ralph Underwood of Joplin, step-sons Jim Gibson of Danville and John Gibson of Morrilton, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. His surviving wife was Vivian Minnis Underwood.
