Melvin K. Johnson, 77, of Williston, ND, passed away Wednesday morning, September 12, 2012, at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston.

Melvin was born April 17, 1935 in Minot, ND to Anton and Laura (Kleven) Johnson. He was raised and educated in the Berthold and Minot area, graduating from Minot High School with the Class of 1953. Melvin attended college both in Nevada and North Dakota.

He enlisted in the United States Navy on Feb 13, 1954 and was honorably discharged on December 13, 1957. Melvin was an ariel photographer with the Fighter Squadron #23 (VF 23) aboard the USS Yorktown (CVA 10). He also did duty at the mercury test site in Nevada.

After his discharge, Melvin went to work for the city of Las Vegas as a firefighter and was a deputy sheriff for the county of Nye in Nevada. He worked for Refrigeration Equipment company in Minot that his brother Roland owned.

Melvin was united in marriage to Bonnie Benson in 1977 in Sidney, Montana. He adopted Bonnie's four children Rhonda, Becky, Crystal and Brian in 1981.

They moved to Williston in 1980 and Melvin went to work in the maintenance department at Mercy Hospital. Bonnie and Melvin were the residential managers at the Upper Missouri Ministries (Bible Camp) at Epping, ND.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Bonnie Johnson of Williston, ND; his three daughters, Rhonda Johnson of Rochester, MN, Becky (Bob) Thomas of Huron, SD, and Crystal (Dan) Hastings of Burlington, ND; one son, Brian Johnson of Williston, ND; ten grandchildren, Joshua Johnson of Williston, ND, Skylar and Madison Johnson of Sawyer, ND, John Mooney of Williston, ND, Kristina (Zack) Brooks and Cheyenne Mooney all of Huron, SD, Casey, Nick, Jared and Nash Hastings of Burlington, ND; one great-granddaughter, Zoey Mooney of Huron, SD; three brothers, Leonard (Betty Ann) Johnson, his twin, Alvin K. Johnson, and Bill (Oveda) Johnson all of Minot, ND; one sister-in-law, Naomi Johnson of Minot, ND; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Anton and Laura Johnson; eight brothers, Gerald, Bloyd, Donald (Regina), Roland (Annabelle), Arnold (Virginia), Joe, Johnny, and Lawrence; five sisters, Kleona, Adeline, Matilda, Amanda, and Annie; and sister-in-law, Donna.

Interment will follow in the Rosehill Memorial Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. in Minot.
