Arnold was born on May 20, 1926 in Tolgen TWP, Berthold, to Anton and Laura Johnson. He attended county school in Berthold and high school in Minot.
He joined the Navy when he was 17, and served during WWII in the South Pacific serving aboard the USS Converse. Following his discharge he returned to North Dakota. Arnold was a brakeman and conductor for Great Northern Railway for 42 years.
He married Virginia Larson on November 10, 1946 in Wolf Point, Montana. They lived in Minot for the remainder. His wife died March 2, 1986. Arnold then retired from the railroad.
Arnold was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Aerie, of Minot, and attended many reunions for USS Converse.
Survivors include sons, Gary, Gig Harbor, Washington, Tryone, St. Paul, Minnesota, Waylan, Salem, Oregon, Joel, Falls City, Washington, Geffrey, St. Paul, Minnesota, Shane, Discovery Bay, California; daughter, Candice Borders, Chino, California; fourteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren, Susie, Moe, Paul, and Tom; brothers, Roland, Donald, Leonard, Richard, Alvin, and Willard, all of Minot, Melvin of Williston.
Funeral services were held at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church of Minot.
