MISHAWAKA -- The Rev. Junior A. Steele, 77, of 14449 Day Road, died at 7 p.m. Sunday (March 19, 2000) at Hospice House of St. Joseph County after suffering from cancer for several months.

He was born on Aug. 21, 1922, in Clark County, Ohio, to Harry F. and Ada M. (Hoke) Steele, and married Martha J. Hinkle on Dec. 31, 1945, in Springfield, Ohio. She died June 29, 1998.

Rev. Steele is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James (Naomi I. "Missy") Bayer and Sharon K. Steele, both of Mishawaka; three sons, Daniel L. of Mount Pleasant, Mich., Joseph E. (Betsy) of Granger and John I. (Terri) of Mishawaka; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Howard (Marie) of Fort Wayne; Arthur (Isabel), Harold (Esther) and Wilbert (Jesse), all of New Carlisle, Ohio; two sisters, Alma Gracy of New Carlisle and Thelma Streber of Springfield.

A brother, Harley, and one grandson are deceased.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Bubb Funeral Chapel North and one hour before the funeral service, which will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Road Missionary Church in Osceola. The Rev. Terry Powell and the Rev. Josh Quarandillo will officiate. Burial will be at Olive Cemetery in Wakarusa.

Rev. Steele joined the ministry at the age of 14 and served as pastor of Missionary churches in Ohio and Pennsylvania, as well as assisting several churches in Indiana after his retirement. He also was an elementary schoolteacher and principal in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

He graduated from Wittenburg University and received a master's degree from West Virginia University.

Memorials may be given for a prayer chapel to be built at Prairie Street Missionary Church Camp in Elkhart and to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
