Ida is the daughter of Seborn Benjamin Posey, Sr. and Candia Lou Ellard. She is one of nine known children and four half siblings from prior marriages of her parents. The children born to Seborn and Candia are Clarence, Seborn Jr., Dallas, Arthur, Ida, Mattie, Willie, George, and Florence.

Her half siblings for her father's prior marriage are Ambrose Eugene Posey and Alice Posey Doss.

Her half siblings from her mother's prior marriage are Elizabeth and Augustus.

Ida married James Edward Atkinson (1901-1990) in Alabama. They have three children: Evelyn, Edward Jr. "Neal", and Jack.

After Ida's mother died in 1916, she was sent to the Baptist Church orphanage upon her death due to their young age. Ida was 12, Mattie was 10, Willie was 7 and Peggy was under 6. The first orphanage they went to in Evergreen, Alabama burned down; they transferred to the Baptist Children's home in Troy, Alabama, It is not know if George also went to the orphanage because he was also under 6 years old. The children were fostered out and at least one child went to live with their half-sister, Alice Doss. Ruby Posey lived with Mattie Armstrong until about 1938.
