Martha Posey was the daughter of Seaborn B Posey and Candia Lou Ellard Duncan Posey. She married Aaron Clay Armstrong on August 23, 1930 in Bessemer, Jefferson County, Alabama.

Mattie is one of nine children born to Seaborn and Candia Ellard. They are Clarence, Seaborn, Jr., Dallas, Arthur, Ida, Mattie, Willie, Florence and George.

Her half siblings from the marriage between Seaborn and Sarah Scott are Alice and Ambrose Eugene.

Her half siblings from the marriage between Candia Ellard and J. A. Duncan are Elizabeth and Augustus "Gus".

After Mattie's father died in 1915 and her mother died on TB in 1916, she and her sisters Ida, Willie and Florence "Peggy", went to the Alabama Baptist Children's home. Mattie left on January 15, 1925 to live with a Rev. and Mrs. S. A. Taylor in Elba, Alabama.

Mattie married Aaron Clay Armstrong when she was 25 years old. They had one son Robert Lewis Armstrong who died in 1939 as a result of an accident.
