Emmitt Thomas was one of six children born to Ben and Lula Thomas. He was born in Carroll County, Mississippi. In 1918 his family moved by train to Texas, settling in the rural community near Alto, Texas. He attended school in the Barsola school district.

On June 3, 1939, Emmitt married Dorothy Merle Starling in Crockett. They lived in the Barsola community and had two children there. Later, they moved to Dickinson, Texas, where three children were born to them. They lived in Dickinson until Emmitt's death in 1960 following an automobile/train accident in rural Angelina County near Clawson, Texas.

Emmitt was survived by his wife, Dorothy, and his five children: Sheila, Linda, Tanis, Vicki, and Michael. He also leaves two brothers, Bennie Alvis (Bo) Thomas and Bennie Gee Thomas, and three sisters, Bessie Lou McKinney, Mildred Vaculik, and Sybil Erlene Einkauf.
