Dorothy Merle Starling was the daughter of Flynn Durkin Starling and Susan Delia Knight. She was born and grew up in the Forest community of Cherokee County, Texas. She had two sisters, Vivan and Marjorie, and one brother Darryll.

Dorothy married Emmitt Thomas in 1939 in Houston County, Texas. They had five children: Sheila, Linda, Tanis, Vicki and Michael. Emmitt was killed in 1960 when the vehicle he and his brother-in-law Darryll Starling were riding in was struck by a train in rural Angelina County near Clawson, Texas.

DICKINSON — Dorothy Merl Cox, 83, passed away January 13, 2005, in Webster, Texas. She was born December 31, 1921, in Barsola, Texas to Flynn and Susan Starling. She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of God in Texas City.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 15, 2005, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas with Brother Johnny Angel officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, January 14, 2005, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

She is survived by three daughters, Sheila Donoho, Tanis Fernandez, and Vicki Chvatal; son, Michael Thomas, thirteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her two husbands, Emmitt Thomas and Benjamin Cox and daughter, Linda Pimentel.

Serving as pallbearers will be Hank Chvatal, Marcus Fernandez, Jared Fernandez, Carlos Salas, Larry Nunez and Eric Nunez.
