On March 28, 1915, Ben married Dezinita Lula Standard. They had two children while living in Mississippi, Emmitt Albert in 1917 and Bessie Lou in 1918. While those children were still young, Ben and Lula moved to Texas, settling in Cherokee County. There three other children were born, Mildred Inez in 1921, Bennie Gee in 1922 and Sybil Erlene in 1924. They also had one child who died at birth in 1925.
Ben was a farmer in the community around Forest and Alto where he reared his family. Lula died in 1938 after a lengthy illness. In the early 1950s Ben moved to Ratcliff, Texas, in Houston County to be near his daughter Bessie Lou who lived in the Plain Community. At the time of his death, Ben was residing in Ratcliff. He was survived by two sisters, Effie Petty of Forest and Mattie Petty of Jackson, Mississippi; two brothers, George Thomas of Lufkin and Drew Thomas of Angleton; three daughters, Erlene Einkauf of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Mildred Vaculik of Sugar Land, and Bessie Lou McKinney of the Plain Community; three sons, Emmitt Thomas and Bennie Gee Thomas of Dickinson and Bennie Alvis Thomas of Rusk; and 16 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Barsola Baptist Church near Alto. Pallbearers were Roe Turner, Henry Dowdy, Jim Vest, Coy Smith, C. B. Broach and Kenneth Petty.
