NEAL R. WHITTEN

Neal R. Whitten was born July 14, 1914 to Levi and Ada Nancy Baker Whitten, south of Phillipsburg, Kansas. He died Sunday, February 26, 1984 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He lived some time around Alma, Nebraska, while he was growing up. On December 9, 1940, he was united in marriage to Helen Lucille Willis in Eddyville, Nebraska. To this union two children were born; Sherrill Lee on March 7, 1942 and Lynn Ann on June 15, 1951.
Neal worked for Cudahay Creamery in Clay Center, Nebraska for a number of years. They moved to Minden in 1950, operating the Minden Creamey from 1950 to 1960, located where BJ's Lounge now stands. From 1960 to 1975, Neal operated the Whitten Produce from his home. From 1960 to 1973 he ran a rural route, picking up produce and sending it to market. Near the end of the time he ran the Whitten Produce, he started working part-time for Pioneer Village. He spent 13 years in the employment of Pioneer Village.
Neal loved his family and spent most of his spare time with them. Time with his friends was cherished after family responsibilities were lessened. His love for horses never left him. He spoke frequently of trips made to Loup City and other nearby towns to watch the horses and tack sell, often on the lookout for some item a friend wanted.
Neal became a member of the First Christian Church in Minden on February 17, 1952. He served in the capacity of deacon for many years.
Relatives preceding Neal in death were his parents; his wife, Helen; his son, Sherrill; and two brothers, Waldo and George.
Survivors are a daughter, Lynn Ann and grandson, Joseph Jeremiah (JJ) of Minden; one sister, Burdell Uplinger and her husband, Lewis, of Buffalo, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Irene Whitten of Alma, Nebraska and Margie Whitten of Metamora, Michigan; one brother-in-law, Harold Willis and wife Margaret of Callaway, Nebraska; one sister-in-law, Bessy Pettijohn and husband Orval of Hemet, California; many nieces and nephews, and a host of close and dear friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the First Christian Church of Minden, Wednesday, February 29th at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Nolan Pierce officiating. Burial was in the Minden Cemetery. Layton Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
