Waldo W. Whitten was born the second child of four children to Levi and Ada Baker Whitten on September 21, 1909 at Glade, Kans. He departed this life Tuesday evening, September 1, 1981 at the Harlan County Memorial Hospital in Alma, Nebr. at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 10 days.
Waldo moved with his family to Phillipsburg, Kans. as a small boy and to the Alma area in 1923.
On December 24, 1934, he was united in marriage to Irene Gebhard at Minden, Nebr. To this union five children were born; Gwendolyn, Wanda, Beverly, Stanley and Janis. They made their home at Alma where Waldo has since resided.
Waldo drove a truck several years for the Tri-County Oil Company, later being employed at the Vickers Rapid Service of which he was managing at the time of his retirement in 1974.
Waldo was a member of the First Christian Church at Alma.
He leaves to mourn his passing his loving and devoted wife, Irene of Alma; one son, Stanley and wife Jeannine of McCook, Nebr.; four daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Westerbeck and husband Donald of Overland Park, Kans., Mrs. Wanda McKenzie and husband Francis of Alma, Mrs. Beverly Keeten and husband Paul, a Tech Sergeant at Hahn Air Force Base, Germany and Mr. Janis Cramer and husband Rick of Funk, Nebr.; two brothers, George Whitten of Metamora, Mich. and Neal Whitten of Minden; one sister Mrs. Lewis (Burdell) Uplinger of Buffalo, Mo.; fourteen grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Memorial services were held Saturday, September 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Banta-Torrey Chapel in Alma with Rev. John P. Thompson officiating. Organ music was provided by Mrs. Ronald Wunibald.
Pallbearers were Rick Cramer, Charles Gebhard, Harlan Gebhard, Francis McKenzie, Donald Westerbeck and Mark Westerbeck. Burial was in the Alma Cemetery. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma had charge of arrangements.
