Martha was born in Ellenberg, New York and moved with her family to Nebraska in the late 1870's as the 1880 census shows them in Phelps County, Nebraska. When her mother died in 1881, she became guardian of the three minor children, Laura, Coral and Willis. The 1885 state census shows she was a dressmaker, and the three children were living with her. She attained land in Phelps and Perkins counties. Tragically she died the 26th of June 1885, from consumption. The three minor children and her brother, George W. Gordon inherited her land and personal property. Phillip Funk, a friend of Martha's, became the guardian of the children. He held the land for them, and when they became of age, he bought the land from them. She was never married.
