George was born in Ellenberg, New York, where he received his schooling. In the late 1870's the family moved to Phelps county, Nebraska. He worked on his father's farm and also attained land of his own. He was married to Elizabeth (Lizzie) Babcock, 29 February 1888, and had one son, Merton William. According to the 1900 Census they were living in Perkins County, near Grant, Nebraska. They moved to Huxtun, Colorado before 1910, according to the 1910 Census, where he established a bank. He and his wife were in an auto accident, and she sustained injuries resulting in her death 8 October 1940. George was in poor health and died 29 February 1944.
