Robert was born in Ellenburg, New York, received his schooling there and married in 1852 to Mary Jane Farley. They had nine children, three dying in infancy. He owned many tracts of land and helped his father farm his many acres. He and his family moved to Nebraska in the late 1870's as they are on the 1880 census in Phelps County, Nebraska, where he had a farm. When his wife died in 1881, he abandoned the three minor children and their oldest sister, Martha, became their guardian. When she died in 1885, her friend Phillip Funk, was appointed Guardian for the two boys, Coral and Willis, as Laura had attained age 18.
