Son of Johnson Greer (born about 1790 at Boyle, Province of Connacht, County of Roscommon, Ireland) and Mary Ross, they married 5 Mar 1806 at Berkeley County, WV.

1810 census Johnson is listed as John Greer. There is 1 male 45 and up (Johnson Greer), 1 male under 10 (Alexander Greer, born 25 Aug 1810) and 1 female 26-45 (Mary Ross Greer).

About 1812 Jerome Bonaparte Greer is born in VA/WV

Dec 1814 article in Martinsburg, WV Gazette, Johnson Greer is accused of stealing a horse on 8 Dec 1914 outside of Shultz Tavern in York, PA. The fact that his children are orphaned soon after the event took place leads me to believe that Johnson may have been hanged for his crime which was the usual punishment back in those days.

Oregon Pioneers lists Jerome arriving at Marion County, OR via the Oregon Trail in 1850. When the family pulled up stakes and took the Oregon Trail across the United States, settling in Oregon, Jerome Sr., was in charge of the wagon train. I can't speak for the other families on this journey but not one of Jerome's family died along the way.

31 May 1862 Weekly Oregonian, Portland, Multnomah, OR
Jerome B. Greer
"Who is he? A resident of Salem. A man who never voted a Democratic ticket in his life. A know nothing and a disciple of Jeff Davis. He is now a candidate on the ticket for state treasurer.

What was he put there for? Because he was known to be a bitter secessionist. The Mountaineer, whose Editor was a delegate at the Corvallis Convention, says of him that, "He rejoiced after the defeat of the Union troops at the Battle of Bull Run."

John Chapman, a well known citizen of Salem. thus testifies in regard to this Greer: In a convention had with Jerome B. Greer, in the store of John C. Bell of Salem, some time in the fall of 1861, the advance in the price of coffee being the topic, Mr. Greer said it would be much higher still if England and France did not interfere and break up the blockade, which he hoped to God they would do.

Having been informed that he denied the above in Dallas, Polk County, I hereby certify that it is true.

Given under my hand this 26th day of April 1862
John Chapman"

Gravesite Details

There is no doubt in my mind that Jerome is buried in the family plot and that the fire that swept through this pioneer cemetery distroyed his marker.
