Mary died at her home near Manton from influenza and paralysis of the heart at the age of 88 years, 2 months, 18 days.

"Mary Louisa Forward, 86, who recently died at her home
at Manton, moved to that district in 1866 and was witness
to many stirring scenes of that day. At different times
she dressed in men's clothing and fought Indians and on
the day of the Bear Creek massacre saved her family by her
bravery and presence of mind. She was the mother of eleven
children, eight of them living."
