In 1849/50, William graduated from Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina.
On December 11th 1856, William was married to the former Miss Elizabeth Owens Turnipseed, daughter of George and Elizabeth [Owens] Turnipseed of Newberry; with whom he had seven known children.
At the outset of the Civil War, William enlisted in as a Private in Company B, 5th Regiment South Carolina Cavalery under that command of Col. Samuel Ferguson. Throughout the early years, he was patroling the coastline, but in 1864 his unit went to Virginia to fight with the Army of Virginia around Richmond & Petersburg.
William D. Mars departed his life on the 12th of May 1889 at the age of 58 years old. He was buried beside his wife, Elizabeth, who had death in 1875.
