Martha Eleanor Willis, daughter of Joshua Willis and the former Miss Rachel Wideman, was born on the 12th day of April 1815 in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Her mother was the daughter of Adam and Millie [Harris] Wideman, who were charter members of Long Cane A.R.P. church.

Around 1831, Martha married John A. Mars, son of Robert Mars of Newberry. Martha and John had thirteen children.

Martha Willis Mars departed this life on the 22nd of May 1871 at the age of 56 years and 30 days. Martha Mars was laid to rest in the Mars family cemetery near her sons, John A., Jr., James and Robert P., who preceded her to the tomb.
