In 1877 he came to Iowa and later was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Kearns, settling on what is now known as the Jake Wassmer farm. Eleven children were born to this union, two of whom preceded him in death in infancy. A daughter, Marguerite, died at the age of 23 years.Mr. Bateman was christened an Episcopalian at birth, later uniting with the Christian church. He joined the Masonic order at Unionville, Connecticut, in 1881, and was transferred to the local lodge in 1886. On his departure for Colorado in 1916, he withdrew his card here and was made one of the few honorary members of the fraternity at Boulder, Colorado.
