IN MEMORY
They are going, one by one, all the friends I fondly love;
They are going to their home in a brighter world above.
Mr. G. Alphonso Hoke, son of Frederick and Katy Hoke, was born March 31st, 1868 [sic]. He was given to God in Holy Baptism. He, being instructed in the doctrines of our holy religion, by the solemn vow of confirmation he was received into full communion with the Evangelistic Lutheran church, at St. John's.
To these vows he was faithful unto death. He was married to Sarah G. Carpenter Jun 27, 1861. They were blessed with seven children, five sons and two daughters.
He was an affectionate husband, kind father, good neighbor, loyal citizen, at all times providing well for his household. He died April 23, 1892.
He was a quiet, orderly man, truthful, honest, and highly esteemed by all who knew him.
He is now missed at home greatly and in his community. He leaves to mourn for him his wife and children, a large connection, and many friends.
Mother and children, we feel confident, your loss is his eternal gain. Weep not for him now gone to rest. Buried at St. John's, April 24, 1892.
"Beyond the rolling river, the mighty river time,
Beyond its rolling surges, lies a sun-bright clime.
We'll soon be over the river, we'll soon be done with time,
We soon shall rest in Heaven, in that sun-bright clime."
His funeral was largely attended and preached by J. M. Smith.
