August H. Bergman, 84, of 220 Virginia St. Versailles, formerly of Osgood, died at 6:20 p.m. Friday at the Coldwater Community Hospital. He had been hospitalized for the last four weeks.

Born August 25, 1896 in Maria Stein, he was the son of Stephan Bergman and Anna Mary Evers (both buried at St. John's). On January 8, 1918 he was married to Emma Brandewie, who preceded him in death on February 15, 1972. He was then married to Anna White on November 27, 1974, who survives with four children, Herbert Bergman, Maria Stein; Mrs. Vitales (Verena) Grilliot, Osgood; Mrs. Fred (Evelyn) Kunkler, New Weston, and Arthur Bergman, Maplewood; two step daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Mary) Francis, Middletown, and Mrs. Francis (Frances) Moorman, Russia; forty seven grand children; sixty five great grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; and seven step great grandchildren.

Two sons, Lester and Virgil Bergman, and five grandchildren are deceased. Mr. Bergman was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being preceded in death by six brothers (Henry, Frank, John, George, Joseph and Lawrence) and two sisters (Mary Anne and Rose Bergman Meiring).

Mr. Bergman was a retired farmer and had remained active in the selling of feeding equipment for farm use. He was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church in Versailles; a member of St. Nicholas Men's society, Osgood. He was also a member of the Senior Citizens of Versailles (which I now imagine was a bunch of old guys sitting around drinking coffee and playing cards but who knows).

A Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Osgood. The Reverend Paul V. Gelembiwiski officiated and burial followed at St. Martin's cemetery, Osgood.

Arrangements were made by Hogenkamp funeral home.
