Charles (called Charley or Chubby) was the third of 12 children of Valentine George Schaaf (1868-1940) and Caroline Elizabeth (Carrie) Jordan (1875-1967). He was born and raised on the Schaaf farm in Murdock, Minnesota. On June 2, 1913, at age 16, he graduated from the eighth grade in a celebration held at the Swift County Courthouse. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on 21 Oct. 1918 and was discharged on 13 Dec. of that year. The 1920 census finds him lodging in Minneapolis and working as an auto mechanic. The following year on 14 April, he married Alice Mabel Gardener (1901-1936), sister of Grace Gardener, who married Charles' brother John. In 1930, the couple lived in Minneapolis with Albert Schwenk; Charley was a wholesale salesman. Albert's half brother Otto was married to Charley's sister Valentina.

Alice died tragically in a car accident in Minneapolis on 31 Oct. 1936, and accident that injured Charley's young daughter Mary Louise.
