The eleventh child (of 12) and fifth daughter of Valentine George Schaaf (1868-1940) and Caroline Elizabeth (Carrie) Jordan Schaaf (1875-1967), Myrtle was raised on farms in Murdock and Dublin, Swift Co.

On 21 August 1937 in Wayne, MI, she married Stanley Cedrith Huggins (1902-1999). The 1940 census shows the family living in Allen Park, Wayne County, MI, where they had also lived in 1935. Stanley works for a tool and die manufacturer. They have four children: 8 year old Mildred, 7 year old William, 5 year old Jack, and infant Rose, 5 months old. Rose is their first child together. The eldest three are the children of Stanley's first marriage, to Cecile Iona Huggins (1897-1935). Myrtle and Stanley would have two more children, Francis Gerald and Marjorie. The couple divorced on 26 Mar. 1943 in Detroit.

Myrtle died at Marian Hospital in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, CA; she lived in Arroyo Grande CA just before her death, with her daughter Marjorie. A fun-loving person, Myrtle remained especially close with her younger sister Carolyn - they were the last two of the 12 children of their parents.
