The 1930 census records Eugene as single, the head of his family's household, doing general farming on the Schaaf family farmstead and living with his mother Carrie and youngest sisters Myrtle and Caroline, ages 15 and 13. By 1935, he had moved to Detroit (as had other of his siblings) and worked for the Hudson Motor Car Company, which employed him until his untimely death in 1950.
In Detroit in 1937, on 11 Jan., Bud married Beulah Fern (Billie) Pillar (1918-1992); the couple had four daughters between 1937 and 1941: Peggy Darlene, Patricia Marlene, Veronica Jeanne, and Sharon C. Schaaf. The young family are living back on the family farm in 1940, with Eugene's father Val as head of household and his mother residing there too. In 1935, according to the 1940 census, Eugene had lived in Fulton, Illinois, and his wife in Minneapolis, MN. By 1942, Bud's family were back in MI and lived next door to Bud's brother Gerald Joseph - their homes were built side by side on Emmons Street in Macomb County. Both had the Brown “Brick-Kote” siding.
Bud was murdered by Walter Noth in 1950 when Noth attacked Bud and his wife in their car on a rural route, in an attempt to assault Bud's wife Beulah.
