The tenth child (of 12) and the sixth son of Valentine George Schaaf (1868-1940) and Caroline Elizabeth (Carrie) Jordan Schaaf (1875-1967), Joe was raised on farms in Swift Co., MN. On Dec, 27, 1937, he married Katherine Rose (Kay or Katie Bell) Hyndman (1918-1981) in Minneapolis. The couple had five children, Arlene Marie, Gerald George (Jerry), Kathleen Ann, James Duane, and Joseph John. On 13 Nov. 1981, he married Marie Ruth Bullen Kreuger. Joe served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a Master Carpenter.
