The last child and sixth daughter of the twelve children of Valentine George Schaaf (1868-1940) and Caroline Elizabeth (Carrie) Jordan Schaaf (1875-1967), Carolyn was raised on farms in Swift Co, MN. Carolyn grew up especially close to her sister Myrtle, who was two years older. They were the last two children of their parents.

On April 3, 1937, she married Mathew Bernard Hammond (1904-1981) in Detroit, MI. The couple had four children: Bruce, Marlene, Bernadette, and Cedric. They made their home initially in Michigan and later in Colorado. The 1940 census records them living in Detroit, where Mathew works for a tool and die maker, as did his brother in law Stanley Huggins, husband of Caroline's sister Myrtle. They later lived in Royal Oak, MI. In March 1979, they moved to Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Carolyn, live many others of her family, died of cancer. She is buried with her son Cedric and husband Mathew.
