He was a U. S. Army veteran of WW II serving with the First Infantry. He enlisted as a Private in Roanoke, Va. April 28, 1943 and was released April 10, 1946 as a Staff Sergeant, Company C, 18th Infantry 1st Division. Hugh Craft received a citation for a Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action near Dessau, Germany 1945. He received a Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement near Kochstedt, Germany in 1945.
He married Anita Hastings Coon on Sept. 11, 1935 in Montgomery County, Va.
He was employed by Swift and Company, first as a salesman and later as a manager. He retired after 38 years of service from Swift and Company.
He had been a member of Hidden Valley Country Club since 1957, where he loved to play golf and cards with his friends.
He passed away on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999 at the age of 82 years at the Veteran's Administrative Medical Center in Salem, Va. Surviving are his wife, Anita C. Craft; a brother, Dennis K. Craft and wife Virginia B. Craft of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999 with the Rev. Carol Johnston officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Sherwood Burial Park in Salem, Va.
