Evelyn Bay (Joliff) Evelyn passed away on September 17, 2010, Sutherlin, Oregon. She was born on February 24, 1912 in Rover, Missouri to John and Lillie Joliff. She comes from a large family of 6 brothers, 1 sister, and 2 half sisters. One of Evelyns brothers was her twin. Evelyn previously lived in the state of Missouri and Colorado. She moved to Sutherlin, Oregon in 1947 with her husband and four children. She became a single mother soon after. She learned to drive and worked to finish raising her family. Her first job was washing dishes at the Sutherlin Hotel while waiting for an opening at Martin Box, where she worked for the next 13 years. In 1963, on advice of her doctor, she found easier work for health reasons. She became a nurses aid at Douglas Community Hospital where she worked for the next 12 years. In 1975, at the age of 63, Evelyn was advised by her doctor to retire. Long years of hard work had taken their toll on her health. Immediately upon retirement, Evelyn became a volunteer for RSVP. She also helped to start the Sutherlin Senior Center and the Sutherlin Oakland Emergency Food Pantry. In 2002, Evelyn was recognized for 25 years of service as a volunteer. She continued her work as a volunteer until Nov. 2009. She was a devoted member of the Sutherlin Assembly of God Church. Survivors include her 2 daughters Lillian Hethcock (Elmer Hethcock), Katherine Alexander, (Royce Alexander), son Elmer Wayne (Wanda Wayne), daughter in law Phyllis Bay, 14 grandchildren, 33 Great grandchildren, 28 Great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. . She was preceded in death by her parents John and Lillie Jolliff, 6 brothers, and 1 sister, son Carl and grandsons Teddy and Carl Alan. Special thanks to Chantelles Loving Touch Memory Care. Funeral services will be on Thursday, September 23, 2010, 2:00 p.m. at New Hope Fellowship, Sutherlin, OR. Visitation services will be on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Sutherlin Chapel of the Roses, Sutherlin, OR, 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. . In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Evelyn's memory to the Sutherlin-Oakland Emergency Food Pantry.
