Mrs. Frank May

Private funeral service will be held at Hadley Chapel Thursday for Mrs Frank (Jeanette) May formerly of Tulare who died yesterday at her Visalia home.

The Rev. C.P. Strawmyer of the Tulare First Congregational Church will officiate and burial will be in the Woodlake Cemetery. The family has requested that no flowers be sent.

Mrs May was born in Nicholville, VA. and came to Tulare as a child and attended local schools. She was a member of the First Congregational Church.

Beside her husband she is survived b two sisters, Mrs. James Setliff, Tulare, and Mrs Katherine Neal, Bakersfield; a brother Fred Gulley, Visalia; two nieces Loretta Nicholson, Tulare, and Mrs Wilma Gorham, Santa Rosa; and Guy Setliff, Tulare; as well as three nieces and four nephews in Texas. Mrs. Alvis Gulley, a sister-in-law that lives in Santa Rosa.

When Hadley Funeral Chapel closed and was sold, the files of the funeral home was given to the Sequoia Genealogical Society, and the are available for research. Jeanette's folder was available for me to see. It contained a copy of her death certificate, a copy of the Memorial folder for her funeral, , and hand written obituary's, for the Visalia Times Delta and one the Fresno Bee, a copy of her funeral arrangements. A note on the arrangements said that she was married in January of 1933, and the soloist was to be Betty Bellinger and she was to sing "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Safe in the arms of Jesus," plus a list of Casket bearers.

The hand written obituary for the Fresno Bee and Visalia Times Delta are : Mrs. Frank May, formerly Jeanette Gulley, of Tulare, Passed away at home last night following an extended illness. She was a member of a Pioneer Tulare family, coming as a child with her family from Nicholson Scott County, Virginia. Mrs. May lived all of her early life in Tulare, and attended schools there. She leaves many friends in this area, having lived in Visalia for over twenty-five years. Mrs. May lived a Christian life and was a member of the Congregational Church for many years. Those surviving are he husband Frank May Visalia, well known rancher, Two sisters Mrs. James M Setliff, Tulare, and Katherine Neal, Bakersfield; a brother Fred Gulley, Visalia; Two nieces, Lorretta Nicolson a piano teacher, Tulare and Mrs Wiliam Graham, Santa Rosa, also a great niece and nephew, Linda and Keith Graham, and a sister-in-law Mrs Alvis Gulley all of Santa Rosa, also Three neices and nephews in Texas. Services will be held at Hadley Funeral Chapel July 10 at 10:00 a.m., with buriel in the Woodlake Cemetery.
